Summary

A defense attorney is prepared to play。 But is she a pawn in a master’s deadly match? A twisting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni。

Keera Duggan was building a solid reputation as a Seattle prosecutor, until her romantic relationship with a senior colleague ended badly。 For the competitive former chess prodigy, returning to her family’s failing criminal defense law firm to work for her father is the best shot she has。 With the right moves, she hopes to restore the family’s reputation, her relationship with her father, and her career。

Keera’s chance to play in the big leagues comes when she’s retained by Vince LaRussa, an investment adviser accused of murdering his wealthy wife。 There’s little hard evidence against him, but considering the couple’s impending and potentially nasty divorce, LaRussa faces life in prison。 The prosecutor is equally challenging: Miller Ambrose, Keera’s former lover, who’s eager to destroy her in court on her first homicide defense。

As Keera and her team follow the evidence, they uncover a complicated and deadly game that’s more than Keera bargained for。 When shocking information turns the case upside down, Keera must decide between her duty to her client, her family’s legacy, and her own future。

Her Deadly Game is a stand-alone novel by award-winning, best-selling American author, Robert Dugoni。 When Keera Duggan takes on the LaRussa murder case, she’s only been with the family firm, Patrick Duggan & Associates for a year, and she’s never defended a murder case。 But she’s the daughter of Patsy Duggan, the Irish Brawler, and no one should underestimate her, especially not her narcissistic, controlling ex, Prosecuting Attorney Miller Ambrose。 He’s vindictive, but she vows that he’s not sa Her Deadly Game is a stand-alone novel by award-winning, best-selling American author, Robert Dugoni。 When Keera Duggan takes on the LaRussa murder case, she’s only been with the family firm, Patrick Duggan & Associates for a year, and she’s never defended a murder case。 But she’s the daughter of Patsy Duggan, the Irish Brawler, and no one should underestimate her, especially not her narcissistic, controlling ex, Prosecuting Attorney Miller Ambrose。 He’s vindictive, but she vows that he’s not satisfying his grudge in this trial。Wealth management multi-millionaire, Vincent LaRussa claims he came home on a June Sunday night from a charity do to find his wife, Anne, shot in the back of the head as she sat in the kitchen in her wheelchair。 The ghost gun is on the floor beside her。 SPD Detective Frank Rossi leads the case, and tries to keep an open mind, but Ambrose has already decided the husband did it and, even if he has to play dirty, he’ll prove it。 There are lots of little unexplained things at the scene, baffling bits of trace that seem to turn the whole thing into a riddle。 Anne had two visitors before Vince returned home and, on that sweltering June night, the air-con had been turned off。 Each piece of information that Keera’s investigator turns up adds another wrinkle to an already puzzling case, and to complicate matters further, Keera is receiving anonymous emails that point her to bits of LaRussa’s history, facts that don’t put him in too favourable a light。 Then there is the allegation of infidelity, and a punishing pre-nup。 Is Vince a devoted husband? Or is he a lying, cheating psychopath? Did Anne’s best friend and doctor cheat with Vince? Who else might have a motive to kill Anne LaRussa? As well as the pressure from the PA, Keera knows she needs to win this one for the sake of the family law firm, suffering her ageing alcoholic father’s reduced performance。 Set in Seattle, there is some intersection with characters from the Tracy Crosswhite series, and Dugoni sets his story against the background of Keera’s online chess game, the tactics of which may appeal to players, and parallel the court case strategies。 There are plenty of twists and red herrings, and the astute reader will keep in the back of their mind an unsolved earlier case。 Another excellent read from the master of the legal thriller。This unbiased review is from an uncorrected proof copy provided by NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer。 。。。more

Another excellent story from one of my favorite authors! After an affair with her boss turns sour, Keera Duggan leaves the prosecutor's office and joins the family law firm, headed up by her alcoholic but brilliant father, Patsy, and her older, pragmatic sister, Ella。 Keera gets the late-night call to meet a client at the police station, Vince LaRussa, who came home from a charity event and found his wife slumped in the kitchen, a bullet to the back of her head。 LaRussa is not under arrest, but Another excellent story from one of my favorite authors! What a fantastic and unique legal drama by one of my favorite authors! 4。5 ⭐️Her Deadly Game, a legal thriller and Dugoni’s newest novel, was smart and absorbing。 The main protagonist Keera, attorney and daughter of the well known ‘Irish Brawler’, is out to prove that Vince LaRussa did not murder his disabled wife, Anne。 This thriller had so many layers and Dugoni weaves them all together flawlessly。 Hoping that this is the first book in a long series。 Releases March 28, 2023。

I haven’t read a crime thriller in a while so when given the opportunity to read Dugoni’s upcoming book, I was in! I really loved the way he weaved the family dynamics into the story。 It was nice to see the real side of family life displayed next to the life of being a defence attorney。 I also was captivated by the suspense of who committed the crime。 The courtroom antics were engaging and the characters were well developed。 I like the idea of the analogy to chess but not being a chess player, I I haven’t read a crime thriller in a while so when given the opportunity to read Dugoni’s upcoming book, I was in! This is a new series (hopefully) by Robert Dugoni。 It is related to his Tracey Crosswhite series in that it is also set in Seattle and Tracey’s old police unit, Violent Crimes, takes the case。 Tracey herself, however, does not make an appearance in this book。 Despite these similarities, this book is not so much a murder mystery, as are the Tracey Crosswhite books, but is more a legal thriller。 The main character, Keera Duggan, is a defense attorney in her family law firm。 Her father, Patrick “Pa This is a new series (hopefully) by Robert Dugoni。 It is related to his Tracey Crosswhite series in that it is also set in Seattle and Tracey’s old police unit, Violent Crimes, takes the case。 Tracey herself, however, does not make an appearance in this book。 Despite these similarities, this book is not so much a murder mystery, as are the Tracey Crosswhite books, but is more a legal thriller。 The main character, Keera Duggan, is a defense attorney in her family law firm。 Her father, Patrick “Patsy” Duggan, known in the legal world as The Irish Brawler, is a star litigator with an outstanding reputation。 But he is getting older, beginning to slip, and struggling with an addiction to alcohol。 Patsy is a great character and has been Keely’s mentor both in the law and in chess。 Keely is an expert chess player who played competitively when she was younger。 Keely is on call after hours when a murder suspect contacts the firm seeking representation。 She fiercely wants to be lead attorney on the case, but she has never before handled a murder trial。 It is decided that she can run with the case provided that Patsy is second chair。 It’s nice that we get to see some familiar faces in the police officers who investigate the case。 And the legal process, which overshadows the police investigation in this book, is fascinating。 One of the twists is quite unique and inventive。 There are a lot of references to chess and the life principles that can be learned from it。 We also see throughout the book an ongoing chess game that Keely is playing against an anonymous opponent online。 As someone who does not play chess, I did not find this game, which was described move by move, to be of interest。 Dugoni does make sure to briefly explain each move for the benefit of the layperson, but I still found these sections to be tedious。 Keely’s chess moves serve to illustrate her personality and her courtroom style。The first half of the book is rather slow as the facts of the case, the investigators, and the legal strategies are laid out。 By the second half, the story is moving right along and the mystery is compelling。 The resolution is unexpected, and I did not foresee the ending。 This would make a great series, especially with the crossover appearances of characters from Tracey Crosswhite’s world。 Perhaps we will someday see Tracey, Keely and Patsy working together the future。 Recommended。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2, available 03/28/23。 The only violence is the initial murder, which is described as seen by the police investigators。 No romance and no sex。 My thanks to the author, Robert Dugoni, to the publisher, Thomas &Mercer, and to NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book。 。。。more

I am a huge fan of Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite Series。 I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read his latest book。While this is not a Crosswhite series book, it does have a few characters from it in this book。Keera was making a name for herself as a prosecutor when her relationship gone bad made her leave and go to work for her family law firm。 Keera's father is a well known criminal defense lawyer。 Unfortunately he is also an alcoholic。 When the firm is hired to defend a potential murderer, i I am a huge fan of Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite Series。 I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read his latest book。While this is not a Crosswhite series book, it does have a few characters from it in this book。Keera was making a name for herself as a prosecutor when her relationship gone bad made her leave and go to work for her family law firm。 Keera's father is a well known criminal defense lawyer。 Unfortunately he is also an alcoholic。 When the firm is hired to defend a potential murderer, it's Keera's chance to prove herself and help save the firms reputation。As the police and the lawyers research the case, more and more information comes to light。 Is the accused innocent or guilty? Does it really matter to the lawyers? Will Keera be able to get him off?A great Legal thriller that has some of the police drama that I enjoyed in previous series。 It also discusses the parallels between the strategy of chess and being a lawyer。I hope this will be the beginning to a new series, I will read them if it does。Many thanks to the author, netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the advance copy。 。。。more

Courtroom drama at its best。。Very engaging and a perfect display of strategy used by both the defense and prosecution。 So riveting and brilliantly examined。。。 The was some what a departure from Dugoni's other works which were more legal thrillers but I really enjoyed it。Keera Duggan was a prosecutor from Miller Ambrose but when the relationship soured she moved into her family's law practice, led by her alcoholic father Patsy。 Now she is the face of the defense and finds herself defending a very Courtroom drama at its best。。Very engaging and a perfect display of strategy used by both the defense and prosecution。 So riveting and brilliantly examined。。。 The was some what a departure from Dugoni's other works which were more legal thrillers but I really enjoyed it。Keera Duggan was a prosecutor from Miller Ambrose but when the relationship soured she moved into her family's law practice, led by her alcoholic father Patsy。 Now she is the face of the defense and finds herself defending a very wealthy philanthropic man who is accused of murdering his wheelchair bound wife。 He is a hard character to read, but she feels strongly about everyone having the right to counsel and she vows to give it her all。 When she founds out that the prosecuting attorney is non other than Ambrose, she knows he will go for her jugular and therefore needs to make all the right moves。 Dugoni introduces Keera's chess game abilities that she uses to relax while unwinding after long days of building a case。 Throughout the book, he sets up actual chess moves that she plays virtually with another opponent。 There were a lot of juggling of chess "pieces" that she had to shuffle to get her client acquitted。 As Dugoni stated in the afterword, "They told me in law and in chess you strategized not just your next move but for the many moves your opponent might make and how you might combat those moves。 Doing this prevented you from being blindsided and helped put together a long-term strategy of how to resolve the game-or a case。。。Don't focus on the problem。 Focus on the solution and how to get it。 "This was a clever tool, but not being a chess player I found myself glossing over the specific plays as the underlying message felt obvious。 Much more comes to light as the murder trial continues and though I had figured out the truth, I certainly did not see some of the storms in the teacup。 Addiction issues, alcoholism, dysfunctional families, and family dynamics all color the breadth of the book。 There is much to love in this fast paced drama, and I spy another series spin off? Fans of Dugoni will not be disappointed! 。。。more
